National Pension System

        Attention, Foreign Residents in Japan!

Have you applied for the National Pension System?

While living in Japan, all foreigners with an Alien Registration Card are supposed to join any one of the public pension systems managed by the Japanese government.

All foreign residents in Japan who have an Alien Registration Card and are between the ages of 20 and 59 are required to join the National Pension System.

You may apply for the National Pension System at the National Pension counter of your municipal office.

When you apply for an Alien Registration Card, please be sure to apply for the National Pension System at the same time.

If you are an employee of a company or a factory in Japan, you are supposed to become the member of the Employees' Pension Insurance System and so do not have to join the National Pension System. In this case, your employer will do the necessary procedure for application for the Employees' Pension Insurance System on your behalf. Please consult with your employer about this matter.

You will receive a Nenkin-Techo (Pension Handbook) when you have completed your application for the National Pension System.

Nenkin-Techo is an Important document for you; you will be asked to present this handbook when you make a claim for pension benefits, when you report a change of address, or when you are employed in a company. (http://www.city.fukuoka.jp/kokuho/english/area3/main3/em3_1.html)
